Peters Twp. man killed in Racetrack Road ramp accident
A Peters Township man was killed in a crash on Interstate 79 north at the Racetrack Road off-ramp Tuesday afternoon.
State police are still investigating the two-vehicle, 2:05 p.m. crash that killed Matthew Edward Johns, 37, of Golfview Drive, according to a Washington County coroner’s report.
According to the report, Johns was operating a sport utility vehicle and was traveling down the off-ramp “at a high rate of speed.” Johns’ vehicle rear-ended a sedan before rolling into a ditch.
He was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of death is still pending, according to the coroner’s report.
The driver of the other vehicle, who also had one passenger, suffered minor injuries, police said.
The northbound lanes were closed while state police did an accident reconstruction. The lanes were reopened shortly before 4 p.m.
Ambulance and Chair Service, UPMC Paramedic Response Unit and the South Strabane fire department assisted at the scene, according to the report.
