With the announcement that State Rep. John Maher won’t be seeking an 11th, two-year term in 40th Legislative District, another Republican hopes to succeed him.

James Roman, 46, of McMurray, said in a news release he is launching a grassroots campaign in the district, which includes Peters and Upper St. Clair townships and part of Bethel Park.

Roman works in real estate sales with Costa Select Realty in Elizabeth, Allegheny County.

“Our roads are in need of major repair, our infrastructure is crumbling, we have some of the highest taxes in the country,” Roman said in his candidacy announcement.

“We continue to lose population and influence around the country. We need positive changes, so now is the time to elect a nonpolitician.”

He called state politics “dysfunctional” and characterized himself as a fiscal conservative who is anti-abortion and a defender of the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Roman is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he has completed course work for a doctorate degree. He has a master’s degree from Duquesne University and a master of business administration degree from Point Park University.

Roman ran unsuccessfully for Washington County recorder of deeds last November.
