CENTERVILLE – A Cokeburg man was surrounded Monday by a crowd of relatives of a woman he was charged with killing in a vehicle accident nearly a year ago in neighboring California Borough.
“I want him to go to jail for the rest of his life,” said Amy Christner, the victim’s mother, after defendant Matthew Alexander Mance left a district court in Centerville.
Mance, 29, avoided a preliminary hearing before District Judge Joshua Kanalis by waiving a string of charges he faces, including homicide by motor vehicle, to Washington County Court.
He is accused of running a stop sign March 25 on East Malden Drive and crashing into a car driven by Angie Givens, 26, of Brownsville, who later died from her injuries in a Pittsburgh hospital. Christner, of West Brownsville, was a passenger in her daughter’s car at the time and suffered injuries that make it difficult for her to walk, she said Monday.
Christner said her daughter left behind three children, ages 10, 7 and 2, and she intends to sue Mance in civil court after the criminal charges are resolved.
“I can’t believe he walked free for almost a year,” she said.
Givens’ relatives wore teal T-shirts containing lettering that memorialized her as they mingled in the waiting room outside Kanalis’ courtroom.
Mance also faces charges of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. He is free on $50,000 unsecured bond.
His attorney, Shelley Duff, declined to comment on the case.
“It was rough,” Duff said. “It’s a horrible situation for everyone.”
