A fire Monday night destroyed a duplex in the village of Westland in Mt. Pleasant Township.

The fire was reported about 7:45 p.m. at the home at 175-176 Dogwood St., said Jay Turner, chief of Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department in Hickory. No one was home at the time the fire was reported.

Turner said the back of the building was engulfed in fire when crews arrived. Flames were coming out of the roof. Turner said firefighters were able to get the flames extinguished quickly.

Mt. Pleasant police said the duplex is owned by Frances Johnson of North Carolina. Turner said her daughter was one of the occupants of the building.

The state police fire marshal was called to investigate, but Turner said the cause is not suspicious. No injuries were reported.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from McDonald, Midway, Houston and Chartiers Township. Crews from Sturgeon and Slovan were on standby.
