Acting police chief named in Monessen

MONESSEN – The city of Monessen has an acting police chief as the sitting police chief prepares for retirement.

Mayor Matt Shorrow named Lt. James Smith acting chief during a reorganization meeting Tuesday, in advance of the Jan. 30 retirement of John Mandarino.

Shorraw said the appointment was based on the recommendations of Mandarino and other city police officers.

Smith has made many drug arrests during his nearly 20-year tenure with the department.
