An Ohio couple suspected of robbing a business near Steubenville, Ohio, Sunday were taken into custody after crashing their car in Robinson Township.

Steven Allen Johnson, 27, of Jewett, Ohio, and Leymon Roseberry, 22, of Steubenville were taken into custody after the car Johnson was driving crashed into a snow-covered hillside on Maple Grove Road in Robinson.

According to court documents filed by Jefferson County, Ohio, deputies with District Judge David Mark, the Special Way Market, Route 213, in Island Creek Township near Steubenville, was robbed earlier Sunday.

A store employee saw a gold-colored sedan leave. The vehicle was later spotted by a member of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, who tried to stop it.

The car fled at a high speed east on Route 22 through West Virginia and into Pennsylvania as it was pursued by law enforcement from Ohio.

Police from Hanover and Smith townships also assisted in trying to get the car stopped.

McDonald police Sgt. Dennis Ahlborn said his department was notified about 6 p.m. when the chase entered their jurisdiction.

Police said Johnson got off Route 22 at the Bavington exit and turned onto Maple Grove, crashing into the hillside.

Ahlborn said Johnson tried to drive off, but was cut off by troopers and taken into custody.

The two were arraigned Sunday night as fugitives before Mark and released to Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies.

The deputies charged Johnson with aggravated robbery, failure to comply with police orders, fleeing or eluding police and assault.

Roseberry is charged with complicity to commit robbery.

Ahlborn said the two were charged last year after an incident at Giant Eagle, 200 Station St., in which fraudulent checks were written.

Roseberry waived charges of forgery, bad checks, theft, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct to court.

Johnson was ordered held for court last month in his absence by District Judge Traci McDonald on charges of forgery, bad checks, theft and receiving stolen property.
