A contractor working on a building for a new car dealership hit a gas line in the area of Route 19 and Weavertown Road in North Strabane Township shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday.

Barry Kukovich, spokesman for Peoples Gas, said Thursday afternoon the area of the gas leak was not dangerous to residents. By 5 p.m., the company repaired the 6-inch main line that was damaged, according to a statement released by North Strabane Township.

“We got the call that a contractor cut into the line at about 9:50 this morning,” Kukovich said. “The line was impacted and torn.”

Kukovich said the line serves a “large portion of the Canonsburg area,” and 20 customers were affected by low or no gas pressure.
