A Canton Township woman is accused of stealing almost $4,500 from a Washington area Cub Scout pack while serving as their treasurer.

Tonia Renee Casterline, 49, of 20 Bel Air Drive, was charged last week by state police with 28 counts of theft for allegedly stealing the money between July 2016 and August.

The Cubmaster told Trooper Thomas Kress she had asked Casterline for banking records the Canton woman would not or could not provide.

On Sept.21, the Cubmaster went to Dollar Bank, asked for an account balance and was told it was $366. The leader knew there should be more money, suspected there were improprieties and closed the account.

She obtained copies of statements and canceled checks and discovered Casterline had reportedly written multiple checks and cashed them. The money was not used for pack purchases or activities.

Casterline reportedly told Kress she made the checks out to cash and endorsed them. She said she kept the money to help pay for necessities for her family. Casterline told Kress she was willing to make restitution of $4,423 to the pack, but paid nothing.

The charges were sent to Casterline from the office of District Judge David Mark. She is scheduled for a Feb. 13 preliminary hearing before Mark.
