Ice turns North Strabane roads into skating rinks
Ice turned several North Strabane Township roads into skating rinks Wednesday evening, causing a handful of crashes including one involving a state Department of Transportation salt truck.
Township police said the roads iced up quickly during the evening commute.
Police were called about 6:15 p.m. to the 900 block of Thomas-Eighty Four Road for a report of several disabled vehicles.
When police arrived, they found about 10 vehicles stuck on the shoulder of the road and unable to move because of the ice.
The road was shut down until PennDOT arrived.
Just after 7 p.m., a PennDOT truck crashed into two vehicles in that area. Police said the salt truck was going north on Thomas-Eighty Four, down a grade and around a bend when it slid. The rear of the truck spun, hitting a southbound vehicle as it passed before coming to rest against a third vehicle. No injuries were reported.
Police also responded to two crashes in the 500 block of Brownlee Road and one on Wilson Road. Those crashes were also due to the icy road conditions.
