The deaths of an elderly North Franklin Township couple found in the bedroom of their home Wednesday morning were likely the result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Doris Mae Barney, 87, and her 88-year-old husband, Lester L. Barney, were found by an employee of Senior Life who was doing a well-being check of the couple, said Washington County Coroner Tim Warco.

Warco said the ignition was turned on in their vehicle in an attached garage, indicating the engine had been running, but the vehicle had run out of gasoline.

Warco is treating their deaths as accidental. He expects the carbon monoxide poisoning will be confirmed by toxicology tests.
