Two Canton Township residents were taken into custody Monday by state police as fugitives from justice on warrants obtained by sheriff’s deputies in West Virginia after they allegedly stole items from a Walmart in Triadelphia and led authorities on a chase in May.

Stefan Cooper, 50, and Carrie Elizabeth Jeter, 41, both of 1 Mark Ave., were arrested after troopers received information from deputies in Ohio County that the two were at that residence.

Both are charged with fleeing from police, burglary and conspiracy. They allegedly stole $892 in merchandise from the Walmart at the Highlands shopping and entertainment complex. One of them allegedly distracted an employee while the other pushed a shopping cart out of the store.

When deputies tried to stop them, they allegedly fled onto Cabela Drive and then drove east on Interstate 70 at speeds of 100 mph. The deputies ended the pursuit out of concern for the public’s safety.

Both were arraigned before District Judge Traci McDonald on the fugitive charges. They were placed in Washington County jail without bond, pending extradition to Ohio County.
