Washington soon will be paving the parking lot next to the police station and senior center.

City council voted to spend $13,000 to pave Parking Lot G after Joseph Thomas, director of Washington City Parking Authority, made the request. Thomas said the lot was put in 40 years ago.

“I don’t think any significant work has been done to it since,” he said during a meeting earlier this month.

The city also is working to pave some of its streets. According to Councilman Ken Westcott, head of the public works department, paving on Tyler Avenue and Burton Avenue already has been completed.

“Every road that needs repaired in town is on the list,” Westcott said. “It’s just a matter of which ones we prioritize.”

Westcott said the city received more impact fee money from the gas and oil industry than expected – $249,000 instead of about $175,000.

“When the additional money came in, we decided to prioritize certain roads,” he said.

John Stout, the city’s superintendent of public works, said a portion of Lockhart Street is currently being paved, and the 300 and 400 blocks of Allison Avenue near the high school are next, with the hope of finishing before school starts.

He said the city also plans to pave the portion of Chestnut Street near College Street, by Washington & Jefferson College. He also mentioned portions of Shannon Avenue, Maple Avenue and Franklin Street.

“We’re trying to spread it around so everybody will see a little bit in all of the wards,” Stout said.
