BENTLEYVILLE – A drab community center in Bentleyville has been transformed into a modern, bright public library and senior citizens center.
The Bentleyville Public Library reopened in early June with a new counter and commons area in the Bentworth Community Center’s second floor.
“It’s definitely a big improvement,” said acting library director Char Carpenter, while children marched around her feet during a story time activity.
A public meeting room in the former schoolhouse built in 1909 was scaled down and converted into a children’s library.
“So the kids have their own little library and play area,” Carpenter said Monday, while the senior center was still moving back into the first floor.
“We’re still making it homey,” said Beth Navrat, coordinator of the Bentleyville Senior Center at 931 Main St. “We’re just glad we’re here.”
The improvements, which also include display and storage areas for Bentleyville Area Historical Society and new restrooms, cost about $900,000. The library is still raising money for Phase II of the project, which would include an elevator, additional parking and an outdoor play area, Carpenter said.
During Phase I, the building was expanded and given a new roof and white siding.
The senior center will hold an open house from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16. Members of the community are invited to tour the refashioned facility and enjoy light refreshments, drawings and door prizes.
