CALIFORNIA – A California Borough police officer injured his arm on broken glass while pulling a suspect in an assault from a pickup truck where he allegedly was hiding Sunday.

Another officer cut an index finger when police broke the driver’s side window to arrest Joshua Scott Schenk after his girlfriend accused him of assaulting her in his residence, court records show.

Police were sent about 11:50 p.m. Saturday to Schenk’s residence at 891 Wood St. to investigate an assault claim.

Schenk’s girlfriend, Marie Jones, said Schenk slammed her head several times into a hardwood floor, causing her to have altered vision and an inability to defend herself. She also accused him of kicking her in the ribs and legs while she was on the floor, police alleged in the affidavit supporting the criminal charges in the case.

Schenk had left the residence before police arrived. The officers searched nearby woods before finding the suspect hiding under a dark cloth in the back seat of the cab of his truck, the record indicates.

Officer Thomas C. McCarthy stated in the record he and the other officer broke one of the truck’s windows after Schenk refused their commands to come out of the vehicle.

McCarthy indicated he suffered serious injuries to his right forearm while pulling the suspect out of the truck. Officer Garrett Kurilko injured his finger with glass, and Schenk also suffered a small laceration, police stated.

McCarthy was treated at the scene by an ambulance crew. The record did not indicate whether Jones sought treatment for her injuries.

Police charged Schenk, 36, with aggravated assault, simple assault, flight to avoid apprehension, harassment and resisting arrest. He is free on $25,000 bond set by District Judge Mark Wilson.
