CHARLEROI – A Charleroi Area High School student has been permanently expelled from classes over a recent threat, school officials said Tuesday.

District Superintendent Edward Zelich said he made an administrative decision to expel the student whom the district has not identified because of his age.

“He will not be allowed on campus,” Zelich said following a closed-door meeting about the case during a special meeting at the high school at 100 Fecsen Drive in Fallowfield Township.

While Zelich did not identify the threat discussed Tuesday, his decision regarding the student was announced less that a week after a statement, “I am shooting the school on March 12th,” was discovered scrawled on a high school boys restroom on the second floor of the building.

It appeared the school board was taken Tuesday to the restroom where that threat was discovered Feb. 28.

Charleroi Regional police said a 17-year-old boy was charged in a juvenile petition with making terroristic threats and disorderly conduct stemming from last week’s threat.

Police Chief Eric Porter said the boy was released to his parents because the teenager is facing misdemeanor charges. A hearing was pending in juvenile court, he said.

Zelich said the student who was expelled does not pose a threat to students or staff.

Police said the boy made the threat as a joke.

Zelich said the district will take any and all measures to ensure the safety of its schools.

The district also took extra security precautions in the days after the threat was discovered by other students and immediately reported to the administration.
