North Strabane man arrested after he allegedly tries to assault officer
A North Strabane Township man already wanted on a warrant for trying to elbow a township police officer who was called to his home for a domestic dispute earlier this month faces new charges after a prohibited weapon was found in his pants pocket when he was taken into custody Friday.
Stanley W. Gammon, 50, of 251 Chubbic Road, was wanted on a warrant obtained by North Strabane police for allegedly trying to elbow and punch Officer Timothy Bliss, who was called to Gammon’s home May 1. Gammon is also charged with having a prohibited weapon and possession of marijuana after police found a spring-loaded knife and the suspected drug while taking him into custody Friday afternoon at his home.
Gammon’s girlfriend initially called police May 1, telling the 911 dispatcher he had a gun but she took it and hid it in the bedroom. The girlfriend also said that she fled from the residence. When police arrived, she was in the driveway, crying. She told police that Gammon was acting “crazy.”
The girlfriend told police he discovered the gun was missing and was looking for it. She also believed he would kill himself or their dog.
Police called Gammon on his cellphone. The last thing he reportedly told police before leaving the home was he was going to make a quick move toward police, saying “Just shoot me. I just want to end it.” Gammon came out and was secured by police. Officers also took a handgun and rifle from the home.
When police told him he was being taken to a hospital for an evaluation, he pulled away and tried to hit Bliss with his elbow. As police tried to put him on a stretcher, Gammon allegedly tried to punch Bliss.
Gammon was in his vehicle at the end of his driveway when police arrived Friday to take him into custody on the warrant.
Gammon was arraigned on both sets of charges before District Judge Jay Weller. He was placed in Washington County jail on $35,000 bond. Gammon faces a May 22 hearing before Weller.
