Public pools gearing up for summer with Memorial Day weekend openings
Summer doesn’t officially start until June 21, but area pools are cannonballing into the season with a splash, as most will open over Memorial Day weekend.
City officials plan to open Washington Park pool Saturday, and it will be open Sunday and Monday, as well. The pool will be open from noon to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays until schools let out for the summer, when it will be open daily with those same hours.
Daily admission is $5 a person. Admission is free for children under 3. Season passes cost $60 a person or $140 for a family.
Similarly, Canonsburg’s Town Park Pool will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday through Monday. Rich Russo, president of the pool’s board, said the pool will be open during those hours on weekends until June 9, when it will start opening daily.
Daily admission is $6 and free for children under 3. Season passes are $60 for adults and $55 for children 4 to 13 and seniors 65 and older.
In Finleyville, Mineral Beach will open for the season Friday. The pool’s hours this summer will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for children 4 to 11. Infants are admitted free. Season passes are $95 for adults and $75 for children 11 and younger.
After it operated for more than 75 years, the pool at Sunset Beach Park in Buffalo Township won’t open this summer, because the longtime owners have sold the property.
Greene County’s three public pools open Saturday for the three-day Memorial Day weekend.
After the holiday weekend, the pools will be closed May 29 through June 1 while school is still in session. Pools will be open daily starting June 2.
Waynesburg Water Park will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Admission is $6 for children and seniors and $8 for adults. At the Carmichaels pool and the Mon View pool in Greensboro, admission is $4 for kids and seniors and $6 for adults. The pool will be open from 1 to 7 p.m.
The Canary Library is set to return this summer. While pools are open, carts with library books for all ages will be available. Both children and adults can read a book, then either return it to the pool or keep it for free, without a library card.
Swimming lessons will be offered in both Waynesburg and Carmichaels. Registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, in Waynesburg and Wednesday, May 30, in Carmichaels. Parents who cannot enroll their children during registration can do so during the pool’s normal business hours until the first class, as space allows. Lessons are $25 a class, with several class levels available.
The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has delayed plans to open the pool at Ryerson Station State Park because of a shortage of lifeguards. It was previously scheduled to open this weekend. DCNR hasn’t announced a new opening date.
