A school van driver faces charges including driving under the influence of alcohol after he allegedly was found intoxicated outside the Intermediate Unit 1 campus at Clark School in Washington Thursday afternoon with an empty whiskey bottle in the van.

John Mcumar, 69, of 912 Mary St., Langeloth, had a blood-alcohol content that was double the 0.08 percent limit at which intoxication is presumed, Washington police said. Mcumar was driving the van for Jake G. Schneider of Atlasburg, police said. A spokeswoman for the company who answered the telephone Friday morning said there were no students on the van. She also said Mcumar, who was in his first year driving for the company, was no longer an employee.

A school police officer called city police about 12:55 p.m. to the building at 1099 Allison Ave. after Mcumar allegedly went up to a door at the school, rang the buzzer and ignored the secretary who was trying to respond. She notified the school officer.

The officer went to the front entrance, where he found Mcumar upset. Mcumar allegedly started yelling obscenities at the officer and was asked to sit in the van.

The officer told police he could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Mcumar allegedly admitted to drinking in the van, and police said an empty Black Velvet whiskey bottle was found inside the vehicle.

Police said Mcumar failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the city police station, where he submitted to a toxicology test. He was released to his wife. Charges will be sent by summons from the office of District Judge Robert Redlinger.
