Charleroi Council met with another vacant seat
CHARLEROI – Another member of Charleroi council has resigned as the borough seeks to address potential financial problems.
Deborah Kruell-Buck, who is her second term on council, handed in her resignation from the board Thursday, stating her business takes up too much of her time to be “an effective council member,” according to her letter of resignation.
“I wish all current and future council members the best as they move Charleroi forward,” Kruell-Buck said in the document.
Her resignation came two months after Randy DiPiazza resigned from his council seat in a statement that only carried the following two words, “I quit.”
DiPiazza also was in his second term on council.
Council last month appointed former Charleroi Mayor Nancy Ellis to fill DiPiazza’s seat until the end of next year.
Councilman Larry Celaschi declined to comment on why there has been turnover on council.
He said the borough needs to make a better effort to advertise vacant seats on council, rather than putting a notice on the door or on Facebook.
“Who knows who’s going to be interested?” Celaschi said.
Meanwhile, a representative from the state Department of Community and Economic Development is scheduled to make a presentation at 6 p.m. Thursday in council chambers on ways for the borough to avoid a financial crisis.
Celaschi suggested the borough learn more about an early intervention program at the DCED to avoid being declared a distressed municipality under Act 47, the state’s response to bringing communities out of severe financial problems.
The borough has set a deadline of noon Wednesday for interested residents to apply for Kruell-Buck’s seat on council, an appointment that would also end in December 2019.
