A Robinson Township man faces charges stemming from a report by his girlfriend, who told police he’d allegedly choked her until she passed out Saturday night.

McDonald police filed charges including aggravated assault and strangulation against 33-year-old Stephen Hyde following a report of a domestic dispute that brought them to Hyde’s residence in the 400 block of Valley Street. Court papers outlining the case said police responded a little after 9 p.m. and encountered the woman, who told officers red marks and finger indentations on her neck had been made by Hyde.

She also told police she’d lost consciousness during the attack. Confronted by police, Hyde allegedly told them his girlfriend had been abusing him and she’d gone into the bathroom and choked herself, according to charging papers.

“It should be noted that Hyde’s statements were inconsistent with the marks around (the victim’s) neck,” an officer wrote in charging papers.

Police also charged him with simple assault and harassment.

Hyde was being held in Washington County jail following his arraignment Sunday, when District Judge Jesse Pettit set bond at $50,000. Court papers don’t list an attorney for Hyde.
