State jobless rate holds steady

HARRISBURG (AP) – Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate remained flat in September at a nearly two-decade low, as payrolls rose to a record high.

The state Department of Labor and Industry said Friday Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate stayed at 4.1 percent last month, the lowest point since 2000.

The national rate is 3.7 percent.

A survey of households found Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force grew by 15,000 to nearly 6.4 million, as employment rose by the same amount and unemployment remained flat at 262,000.

A separate survey of employers showed seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls rose by 7,700 in September, hitting another record high above 6 million.

The biggest gainers were professional and business services, education and health services and the construction sector.

Friday’s figures are preliminary and could change.

Credit union to lead Cal U. workshop

PSECU, the largest credit union in the state, is sponsoring a Financial Reality Fair at California University of Pennsylvania from 11?a.m. to 1?p.m. Tuesday. The event will be an interactive budget simulation workshop for Cal U. students, enlightening them about financial decisions they will face following graduation. It will be free and will take place in the Performance Center on the second floor of Natali Student Center.

Students will register when they arrive.
