Thanksgiving is fast approaching – it’s less than five weeks away – and the annual 2000 Turkeys campaign is in full swing.

For more than 35 years, the goal of 2000 Turkeys has remained the same: to provide Washington County families in need with Thanksgiving dinner.

2000 Turkeys is a grassroots effort supported by local businesses, organizations and individuals whose donations put a turkey dinner on the table of families who are being assisted by Greater Washington County Food Bank.

About 5,500 food-insecure families turn to the food bank each month, and more than 50 percent of those who receive help from the food bank are children and senior citizens.

The 2000 Turkeys campaign is the largest fundraiser for the food bank.

2000 Turkeys has been in existence since the early 1980s, when it was launched to help feed the underemployed and unemployed during the holiday season.

The campaign aims to raise $100,000. Through Thursday, 2000 Turkeys has raised $3,365, so much work remains before Nov. 22.

You can help. If you’re hosting a Steelers party for friends and family, have them bring – in addition to an appetizer – a couple of dollars for 2000 Turkeys. Or, hold a causal day at work, and collect a dollar or two to donate to 2000 Turkeys.

No donation is too small, or too large. And, every penny collected from the 2000 Turkeys campaign (other than the cost to rent the post office box) goes toward making sure food-insecure families in Washington County get to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner.

For many, donating to 2000 Turkeys is an annual tradition.

A post-it note attached to one donation read, “Great cause! I’m so proud to donate to this each year!”Please consider donating to 2000 Turkeys, and help your neighbors during the holiday season.

To make a donation, send a check to 2000 Turkeys, P.O. Box 2000, Washington, PA 15301.
