High Point bar and restaurant to be sold at auction
CALIFORNIA – A bar and restaurant known for its dramatic view of a horseshoe bend along the Monongahela River will be sold next month at auction.
High Point owners Bob and Loretta Sepesy have decided to retire and listed the business along Old Route 88 in California Borough for sale at a minimum bid of $150,000.
“We want to have fun with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” said Bob Sepesy, 74, whose family has been in the bar and restaurant business for many decades in Washington County.
“It has a long history,” he said of the building that sits at the edge of a 350-foot-tall cliff overlooking Newell in Fayette County and California Borough in Washington County.
The building, constructed in 1920, was a filming location for the 1984 film “Maria’s Lovers,” starring Nastassja Kinski, John Savage, Robert Mitchum and Keith Carradine.
The Sepesys purchased the business in 1986 and added windows and a deck facing the river to allow more customers to take in the spectacular view.
“I hope that someone who gets it exploits the view,” he said.
He said bald eagle sightings now take place daily at the business.
“I loved it,” he said. “I loved the people.”
The bar and restaurant closed a year ago, but it remained available for private events.
Williams & Williams Real Estate of Tulsa, Okla., will conduct an online auction for High Point from Nov. 26 to 28.
