Organizers of events at three sites for this weekend’s Washington and Greene Counties’ Covered Bridge Festival have canceled their plans in the wake of a massive storm that brought several days of rain to the area less than a week earlier.

The decision to call off events at the 141-year-old Krepps Covered Bridge, which spans Raccoon Creek in Mt. Pleasant Township, was announced Wednesday, a day after two other bridges were pulled out of the festival.

In a brief Facebook post, an account bearing the bridge’s name and set up to share information about the festival said the field at the site wouldn’t sustain heavy traffic because of recent weather.

The inland remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon doused Southwestern Pennsylvania with heavy rain from late Friday until Monday, causing widespread flooding by the time the storm abated.

Amwell Township, which holds events at Hughes bridge, and The White Covered Bridge Association, which organizes the program at the eponymous site in Greene Township, canceled their respective programs Tuesday. Plans are still on for seven other sites for the 48th year of the festival, which is sponsored by both counties’ tourism agencies.

“We are planning to move forward with a great Covered Bridge Festival at Mingo Creek Park this weekend with The Weather Channel website currently forecasting mostly sunny skies and low 80s in temperature for Saturday and Sunday,” said Jeff Kotula, president of Washington County Tourism Agency, in an email.

Kotula added those seeking updates can visit the agency’s website at www.visitwashingtoncountypa.com or its Facebook page.
