Washington police dog collars robbery suspect
Washington’s police dog collared his suspect Sunday when he helped to capture a Washington woman who allegedly robbed a pizza delivery driver.
Shiona Qushar Gilbert, 19, of 54 McCarrell Ave., was taken down by the dog as she ran from the scene in the 100 block of Jollick Manor just before midnight Sunday. She was tackled by Officer Matthew Karlosky near Crumrine Towers and then was bitten in the back by Karlosky’s K-9 partner, Tony.
Police were called about 11:40 p.m. for a report of a pizza delivery driver being assaulted. When Karlosky arrived, he saw two people run from the area and started chasing them, warning that the dog would be released if they did not get on the ground. The two split up but kept running.
Gilbert was found in the parking lot of Crumrine Tower, where she was taken down. She was taken to Washington Hospital to be treated for a contusion and the dog bite before being medically cleared for arraignment. At the time of her arrest, she was dressed in men’s clothing.
While at the hospital, Gilbert told police that there were five or six other people present during the assault and robbery. She also told police that they planned to rob the driver. Her cellphone number was found on the receipt for the pizza.
The delivery driver for Papa John’s told police that he drove himself to the hospital after being punched and kicked. The 19-year-old was able to identify Gilbert as one of the robbers. He was treated at the hospital for facial injuries. The driver told police that the pizza, his cellphone and $20 were stolen in the robbery.
Gilbert was arraigned before District Judge Jesse Pettit on charges of robbery, resisting arrest and theft. She was placed in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond. Gilbert is scheduled for a Sept. 26 preliminary hearing before District Judge Robert Redlinger.
