According to an EQT spokeswoman, a gas release that was reported Wednesday evening at a well pad in North Strabane Township was contained as of Thursday afternoon.

Natalie Cox said in an email the site returned to “normal operations.” She said the state Department of Environmental Protection and local emergency services were notified that over the next few days there still may be “intermittent flaring activity” at the site.

“Gas-detection levels remain at a safe limit,” Cox said. “However, EQT will continue monitoring gas levels around the perimeter of the well pad and surrounding residences as an additional safety precaution.”

The unexpected gas release happened Wednesday afternoon off Munce Road. The DEP and local emergency services determined residential evacuation was not necessary. Gas-detection monitors were installed, according to an initial news release.

DEP representatives did not return phone calls Thursday.
