The Washington County Transportation Authority board, after extensive discussion Tuesday, approved the addition of Washington-to-Mon Valley fixed-route bus service via McMurray, Venetia and Finleyville.

The addition of the Peters Township “County Line B” route and its terminus in Monongahela will also spell the demise of some bus runs between Washington and McDonald beginning April 29.

The ability to serve more employers and their employees along the Route 19 commercial corridor figured into the mapping of a route through Peters Township, said Joe Thomas, transit coordinator.

“We’ll reduce the hours of service by three hours a day,” said Sheila Gombita, executive director of the transportation authority.

The addition of a Mon Valley route and a connection with the Mid-Mon Valley Transit agency came to light last summer as part of a five-year plan for the Washington County Transportation Authority.

Designated stops in Monongahela will be along Route 837 at the gazebo at the Monongahela Manor high-rise apartment building, 401 W. Main St., and the Sheetz convenience store, 111 E. Main St.

Estimated travel time from Monongahela to Washington and vice versa will be one hour, 20 minutes.

From Monongahela, riders will be able to transfer to Mid-Mon Valley Transit’s Charleroi or Belle Vernon bus, from which they can transfer to a Cal Commuter line to California and its university.

The fare for the County Line B route will be $2.50. New schedules will be appearing on the transit provider’s website on April 15 at www.freedom-transit.org.
