Racehorse barn at Greene fairgrounds to be repaired
WAYNESBURG – The Greene County commissioners approved a contract Thursday to repair a racehorse barn at the fairgrounds that was damaged by a windstorm in February.
The commissioners voted unanimously on the agreement that will pay $8,800 to Mowry General Contracting of Irwin to replace the metal roof and various wooden joists on the horse barn at the Greene County Fairgrounds.
The Feb. 25 windstorm rolled the metal roof up the barn, ripping a quarter of it off the ceiling. Last month, an engineer and architect investigated the damage and determined the barn is structurally sound and that there was no damage to the rafters.
Mowry’s estimate was about half the cost of two other offers the county received. Ames Construction in Waynesburg estimated the repairs to be $18,500, while LJ’s Construction in Jefferson bid the cost at $14,375. The bids were “lump sum” estimates that did not include itemized costs, county chief clerk Jeff Marshall said.
Marshall said he hopes construction can begin in May and be completed by June. He added that Mowry has performed work for the county in the past, including roof construction for the pavilions at Mon View.
Also during the meeting, the commissioners approved a proposal from Mackin Engineering for the first phase of the softball facility at the new Wisecarver Dam county park. The work will include wheelchair-accessible paths to connect the recreational resources on the perimeter of the softball fields and parking lots.
The commissioners also agreed to spend $6,365 to purchase a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup truck from Mt. Morris Auto Sales for the county’s redevelopment authority.
