“Amity and Prosperity” awarded Pulitzer Prize

“Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America,” the 2018 book by journalist Eliza Griswold on the impact fracking had on a Washington County family, has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize, it was announced Monday.
The book won in the general nonfiction category.
In awarding the prize, the Pulitzer board called the book “a classic American story, grippingly told …”
“Amity and Prosperity” focuses on the family of Stacey Haney, an Amity resident and single mother who came to believe that fracking harmed the health of her family and their animals. Haney and several neighbors eventually filed suit against the natural gas company Range Resources, and it was settled in early 2018 with terms undisclosed.
“I’d just say that this is really about the people who shared their lives with me on both sides of that issue, and the story – and the prize – belongs to them,” Griswold said in an email message.
“Amity and Prosperity” was one of two Pulitzer Prizes awarded Monday tied to news stories in the Pittsburgh region. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was awarded a Pulitzer in the breaking news reporting category for its coverage of the massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill in October. Also, Rob Rogers, who was fired from the Post-Gazette last year for cartoons lampooning President Trump, was a finalist in the editorial cartooning category.
The Pulitzer Prizes honor achievements in journalism, literature and music.
