Four days before Christmas, a new natural gas-fueled power plant began stirring. And more.

Tenaska Westmoreland Generating Station became operational Dec. 21. Construction of the facility – in South Huntingdon Township, off Interstate 70 near Smithton – took a little more than two years.

The 940-megawatt plant, in southwestern Westmoreland County, is capable of generating electricity to about 940,000 homes in 13 eastern states, plus the District of Columbia. It is tied into PJM Interconnection, a regional grid.

Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners LLC owns the new plant, which is made up of affiliates of Tenaska, Diamond Generating Corporation and J-POWER USA Investment Co. Ltd. Tenaska is an energy company based in Omaha, Neb.

Jerry Crouse, chief operating officer and vice chairman of Tenaska, said in a statement: “Tenaska Westmoreland is a highly efficient generating facility that is well suited to meet the needs of the PJM market. We … look forward to Tenaska Westmoreland being a reliable power producer for decades.”

Tenaska Westmoreland is the 17th power project the company has brought online. That fleet includes 11 natural gas-fueled and renewable power plants that, combined, are cable of generating about 8,000 megawatts.

The company said three-fourths of the 24 employees in South Huntingdon reside in Westmoreland or adjacent counties. About 650 were employed during the height of construction.
