MILLSBORO – No one was injured in a large commercial structure fire Saturday afternoon at Millsboro Lumber and Hardware Co. in Millsboro.

Fire crews responded just after 2 p.m. to the lumber yard that sits between Route 88 and the Monongahela River on the north end of Millsboro.

“As of right now, we think that it started in the front portion of the building,” East Bethlehem assistant fire Chief Nick Babko said.

Babko said the store was open and one worker was there when the fire started. When fire crews arrived, they climbed truck ladders and started spraying water on the roof from above it. Babko said the building appeared to be a total loss.

“We’ll know more once we have a chance to get inside,” he said around 4:30 p.m. “The store was pretty well stocked.”

Crews were seen pulling burned equipment out of the building, and Babko said there were paint cans, lumber and other supplies inside. He said the amount of items inside made “entry” a little more complicated, but they had enough man power and access to water to affectively put the fire out.

Two other storage buildings sat on either side of the one that burned, but Babko said they were not damaged.

“All the exposures were protected,” he said.

Due to how long the crews were out there in the cold and snow, a rehabilitation center was set up for them nearby with a warming tent, coffee and water. Assisting East Bethlehem and Fredericktown firefighters, were Richeyville, Bentleyville, Denbo Vesta Six, California, and Rices Landing and Jefferson from Greene County. Multiple EMS teams and police also assisted at the scene.

Traffic was slowed and redirected off of Route 88 for hours.
