Democrats and Republicans will be meeting separately to choose candidates for a special election April 2 to fill a vacant state Senate seat, but they will convene on the same day.

Democrats will begin selecting a candidate at 11 a.m. Jan. 27 at the Library Fire Hall, 6581 Library Road, South Park Township.

Vying for the nomination are Olivia Benson, Pam Iovino, Martin Schmotzer and Dr. Bob Solomon.

The process is expected to take about three hours.

Republicans, meanwhile, will gather at 3 p.m. that day at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 164 Fort Couch Road, Bethel Park.

Announced candidates for the GOP are D. Raja and Devlin Robinson.

WhensState Sen.Guy Reschenthaler was elected as a member of Congress representing the 14th District, he had to resign his seat in the 37th District, which encompasses Pittsburgh’s southern and western suburbs in Allegheny County and Peters Township in Washington County.

Outgoing Lt. Gov. Mike Stack issued a document Jan. 4 that a special election will take place April 2 to fill Reschenthaler’s unexpired term. The 37th Senatorial District office won’t be on the ballot again until 2020.
