A well-known and dedicated fire chief in the Mon Valley died of natural causes in his home Tuesday night.

Carroll Township police Chief Paul Brand said longtime Carroll fire Chief Rob Greenlee was found dead in his home about 10 p.m., prompting many neighboring fire companies to offer sympathies to his family and department on social media.

“He was one in a million there,” Brand said Wednesday.

“He was one of those guys who was 100 percent fireman,” he said.

Brand said Greenlee, 65, was not afraid to drop everything to help someone in need, and that he had been with Carroll Township Volunteer Fire Department for decades.

“Someone like that is hard to replace,” Brand said.

John Hess, a fire chief in nearby Forward Township, said many firefighters wondered Tuesday night why Greenlee wasn’t at a fire in Forward.

“It wouldn’t matter. He could have been sick as a dog and he would have been here,” said Hess, chief of Gallatin-Sunnyside Volunteer Fire Department.

Greenlee began his career in firefighting as a teenager in Waynesburg, and served in emergency services in Washington County since 1972, according to his obituary. He was fire chief in Carroll for the past 15 years.

Brand said arrangements were being handled by Ferguson Funeral Home and Crematory in North Belle Vernon.
