A large fire that destroyed a building at Millsboro Lumber and Hardware Saturday afternoon started with a fire in a chimney, according to state fire marshal James Garlick.

He said the fire began in the chimney and ignited combustible materials near it.

Firefighters from seven different departments in Washington and Greene counties spent more than three hours putting out the fire, the smoke from which could be seen for miles. The building was one of several belonging to the lumber yard, which sits between Route 88 and the Monongahela River on the north end of Millsboro.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to the other buildings.

East Bethlehem fire Chief Mark Giovanelli said the building was insured, but he wasn’t sure if the inventory inside it was. He said the building was “pretty old,” and the damage was significant.

“I guessed at over $1 million in damage,” he said.
