Monessen School District upgrading facilities with new energy-efficient lighting system

MONESSEN – A new Trane LED lighting system is projected to save the Monessen School District about $47,000 a year.

On Tuesday, the Monessen board of school directors approved the implementation of an energy conservation lighting retrofit project for the district’s buildings, fieldhouse and a garage. Total cost for the project won’t exceed $425,000 and the district will make annual payments of $45,000 for 12 years. In addition, Trane will be installing an $8,000 scoreboard for the softball field.

“The new lighting system will pay for itself, when you factor in the money we will recouping in electricity savings,” said school board President Roberta Bergstedt, during the board’s monthly meeting. “We will be saving about 70 percent of our total costs for lighting our facilities.”

Also, during the meeting, Melvin Lewis, senior director of operations for Dick’s Sporting Goods, presented the district with a $10,000 grant to upgrade the baseball field. The renovations are expected to be completed before the start of the spring baseball season.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved a settlement for a tax assessment appeal for the Eastgate 11 building.
  • Adopted the Act 1 Resolution for the 2019-2020 school year. The Act 1 index is used to determine the maximum tax increases for each tax the school district levies. Bergstedt said the district will not increase taxes to a level set by the inflation index unless the voters approve a tax increase in a referendum.
  • Authorized the execution and delivery of a master equip
  • ment lease purchase agreement.
  • Approved the administrator compensation plan for a period covering July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023.
  • Accepted the resignation of Sam Perry as head varsity soccer coach, effective immediately, and the resignation of Tiffany Frolo as head cheer coach and Amy Cooper as assistant cheer coach, effective after fulfilling the requirements of
  • the 2018-2019 school year.
  • Approved the hiring of Kate Johnston-Moschak as a guidance counselor long-term substitute.
