McGuffey School Board approved a 2019-20 preliminary budget during its Thursday meeting and will seek approval to raise taxes above the state-allowable index.

Approval of the $34.05 million preliminary budget enables the school district to apply to the state Board of Education for exceptions available under Act 1.

The district’s allotted Act 1 Index is 0.35 mill, and a tax increase beyond that figure would require approval.

Currently, McGuffey’s millage rate is 12.35.

Expenses in the preliminary budget are about $2.1 million more than in 2018-19.

The district’s projected fund balance is $4 million, and no decision has been made about a tax increase or using the fund balance.
