A Washington County jail inmate currently awaiting trial for allegedly raping a woman received new charges on claims that he assaulted corrections officers.

Nathaniel Griffin Jr., 26, of 203 Lincoln Ave., Canonsburg, was charged with aggravated assault and simple assault for allegedly attacking and biting three corrections officers last October.

Washington police filed the new charges against Griffin on Monday.

According to the criminal complaint, on Oct. 13, Griffin requested a new pair of sandals, and began to shout for a captain.

When a group of five corrections officers went to his cell, Griffin allegedly tried to exit the cell.

Though he initially complied with an order to lie down, police say Griffin got up and began fighting the corrections officers.

According to the complaint, Griffin bit Andrew Haburjak in the right hand and James Fidler in the left forearm. Christopher Kaschok suffered a minor shoulder injury during the altercation.

Police said surveillance footage captured a “large portion of the incident.”

Griffin was arrested last year, accused of raping a former co-worker in her home while she was unconscious in May 2018.

His bond was set at $250,000, and Griffin has remained in Washington County jail. Jury selection for his trial is currently slated to begin Sept. 16.
