CHARLEROI – Random acts of kindness will be the catch phrase in Charleroi Area School District during the 2019-20 school year.

During the monthly school board meeting Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. Edward Zelich outlined plans to create a more positive environment for all students, teachers and staff.

“Going into the new school year, we want to empower both adults and students alike to bring about meaningful culture change at Charleroi district,” said Zelich. “We will be encouraging everyone to show more kindness and compassion during their daily encounters with each other.”

To kick off this initiative, a group of administrative staff from Charleroi Area School District will join Intermediate Unit 1 for a Rachel’s Challenge event at California University of Pennsylvania on Aug. 14. Based on the life and writings of Rachel Scott – the first person killed during the Columbine High School shootings in 1999 – the Rachel’s Challenge event will feature a variety of presentations and discussions aimed at creating positive school cultures.

“We hope to bring back ideas how to strengthen relationships and build trust throughout our campus,” said Zelich.

Also during the board meeting, Zelich noted that the district is applying for a $25,000 Safe Schools Initiative Grant for equipment. He said the district hopes to use grant money to replace more than 120 security cameras throughout Charleroi’s campus. Zelich added that Charleroi’s administrative team included school principals to help write the grant.

“We are proud that our principals became more involved with grant writing,” said Zelich. “We wanted to give them more ownership in the process and help them become leaders.”

In other business, the board:

  • Renewed a contract with Blackboard Inc. and approved a public education agreement with Synovia Solutions and an agreement with Transfinder
  • Hired a social caseworker for Charleroi Elementary School
