Canonsburg Hospital will host its third annual Child Safety Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Continuing its tradition of record turnout, the event has more than 350 community members registered to date.

In addition to giveaways and the chance to ask questions of medical personnel and local fire, police, EMS and pharmacy professionals, the free event will feature: a LifeFlight medical helicopter, “touch-a-truck” emergency vehicle demonstrations, the Coast Guard, a visit by the Pirate Parrot, and a chance to win Pirates tickets, bicycles and T-shirts.

Unintentional injuries remain the leading cause of death for kids under the age of 19 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Canonsburg Hospital started Child Safety Day to increase awareness of injuries that, all too often, are preventable and avoidable. In addition to motor vehicle-related accidents (the No. 1 cause), leading causes of death for children also included suffocation, drowning, poisoning and fire.

Dr. Kate Latouf, medical director of the department of emergency medicine, will be joined at the event by her fellow emergency department physicians Anthony D’Alessio, David Abt and Deylin Negron-Smida, along with several other physicians and medical personnel.
