Washington police charged a Pittsburgh man with several felony counts of assault for allegedly attempting to grab an aluminum bat from his trunk after police pulled him over Friday.

Legend Williams, 25, of 715 Whitney Ave., was charged with four counts of assault of a law enforcement officer, four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of simple assault, four counts of terroristic threats, resisting arrest and summary traffic offenses.

According to the criminal complaint, Officer Paul Becker pulled Williams over in the 10 block of East Wheeling Street for an expired inspection.

Becker alleges in the complaint that Williams refused to hand over his registration and jumped into the passenger seat. Becker called for additional officers to come to the scene.

According to the complaint, Williams got out of the car, ran to his open trunk and “placed his hand” on an aluminum bat. Police said there was a machete next to the bat.

Becker and three other officers attempted to pull him away from the trunk.

According to the complaint, officers struck Williams in the knees and hit him with a blackjack before placing him under arrest.

Williams was incarcerated in Washington County jail on $100,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 12 before District Judge Robert Redlinger.
