Franklin Township residents will have a second opportunity Monday to voice concerns, ask questions and gather information on the new comprehensive plan.

The township’s comprehensive plan steering committee is holding another open house meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the municipal building, 568 Rolling Meadows Road.

After 30 years, the township decided earlier this year to update its comprehensive plan. The committee – made up of the township’s planning commission, zoning hearing board, residents and business owners – held the first open house meeting in April, where the public was able to provide feedback on what they’d like the township to accomplish in the next 10 years.

After that meeting they were able to decide on what major issues and goals the community wants the township to address in the plan, such as infrastructure and utilities, retail business attraction, housing, and a transportation network, including the Route 21 corridor.

“Participants will have the opportunity to provide input on the vision that has been created for the plan, the issues relevant to the township, and the goals of the plan that have been developed to date,” Dennis Martinak, of D Martinak Planning and Consulting, said in a news release.

The township hired Martinak earlier this year to help them develop the comprehensive plan, which the supervisors will use to update land-use policies and ordinances to support growth and development.

During the first hour of Monday’s meeting, Martinak and the committee will offer presentations about the plan’s progress, followed by a question and answer session.

“Right now we’re trying to narrow down some of the issues and prioritize some of the goals,” Martinak said. “We’ll be talking a little bit about the adoption process.”

The process isn’t over after Monday’s meeting, Martinak said, and there will be many other opportunities for the public to express any concerns or questions along the way. He said once the committee finalizes the plan, it will go to the township’s planning commission for approval before eventually going before the township supervisors.

Before the supervisors can approve it, the plan will have a 45-day public comment period to provide the supervisors with additional input, Martinak said.

“We just want to make sure it reflects what the entire community wants to see in Franklin Township in the next 10 years or so,” he said.
