Pennsylvania American Water changes water treatment process
Pennsylvania American Water will temporarily change its disinfection treatment process in the Pittsburgh area water system from a chloramine residual treatment to a free chlorine residual treatment.
The change is part of a maintenance program, which will include the distribution system being flushed, according to a notice posted on the company’s website.
From Tuesday through April 8, customers in Pittsburgh, Southern Allegheny County and Washington County may notice an increase in the taste and smell of chlorine in their water. While the different neighborhood systems are flushed, between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays, customers may also notice discolored water.
The company said the water will still be safe to drink and that they will be monitoring the water quality throughout the maintenance.
