WAYNESBURG – Rob Toth announced during Monday night’s Waynesburg council meeting that he will retire as borough police chief at the end of May.

Toth, who has spent nearly 22 years with the department, was elevated to chief in July 2013 following the retirement of longtime police chief Tim Hawfield.

Borough Manager Mike Simms said council will begin advertising for the position soon. Toth’s last day is scheduled for May 31.

“Council stated they would like to have someone else in place before he retires,” Simms said. “But of course that will depend on the timing of application and interviews.”

Before coming to the borough, Toth was an officer for the Hanover Township Police Department and a deputy for the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

During his tenure as chief, Toth implemented the commercial truck inspection detail that trained two borough police officers on the process to inspect tractor-trailers and other commercial vehicles traveling along High and Greene streets in Waynesburg.

Toth did not indicate his plans after leaving the position.
