Special election candidates scheduled for forum Wednesday at RMU
The League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh and the Political Science Club of Robert Morris University are co-sponsoring a forum Wednesday in preparation for the special election in the state Senate’s 37th District.
The candidates are Democrat Pam Iovino and Republican D. Raja, both of Mt. Lebanon. They are vying to replace former state Sen. Guy Reschenthaler, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the 14th District in November.
The forum is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Robert Morris University Ferris Ballroom in Yorktown Hall, 8256 University Blvd., Moon Township.
The nonpartisan League of Women Voters has chosen the format and set the ground rules.
The district includes Peters Township in Washington County and, in Allegheny County, the South Hills and airport corridor.
Voters from those areas will be able to go to their polling places from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2.
Tuesday, March 26, at 5 p.m. is the deadline to request an absentee ballot for the special election. Absentee ballots must be returned to county elections offices no later than 5 p.m. Friday, March 29. A postmark by that date on a ballot that is received by an elections office after the deadline does not comply with state election law.
As of midday Monday, the Washington County elections office had received 96 absentee ballot requests.
The Allegheny County League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh has prepared an online voters’ guide for the special election at Vote411.org featuring both candidates.
The league posed questions about an independent citizen redistricting commission, availability of semi-automatic weapons, renewable energy and expansion of the Medicaid program in Pennsylvania.
