Local farmers eligible for disaster relief assistance
Pennsylvania farmers struggling with the aftermath of 2018’s rainfall may be eligible for disaster relief assistance from the federal government.
Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration announced Monday that farmland owners across 61 Pennsylvania counties are eligible for relief following a disaster declaration by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Eligible counties include Washington, Greene and Allegheny.
”Statewide disaster relief assistance is a vital resource that helps farmers overcome challenges caused by unpredictable weather and conditions outside of their control,” said Wolf. “The past year was particularly challenging for Pennsylvania agriculture, so I encourage all eligible producers to apply for this assistance ahead of the next growing season.”
The funding is meant to assist farmers with any losses that occurred due to the extended rainfall during the last crop year.
According to a release, relief can include emergency loans from the federal Farm Service Agency.
Farmers are able to apply for loans up for eight months following the disaster declaration, and can obtain assistance through their local FSA office. More information on the USDA disaster assistance program is available at disaster.fsa.usda.gov.
