CHARLEROI – More security enhancements will soon be made in the Charleroi School District.

During a monthly meeting of the Charleroi school board on Tuesday, Superintendent Ed Zelich said the district has purchased four metal detectors that will be used to screen students and visitors. Zelich told the board that Charleroi’s safety committee recently visited Ringgold’s middle and high schools to learn how that district operates its metal detector system.

“We came back with a lot of helpful information,” said Zelich. “That will help us work out the kinks when we roll out the metal detector implementation at our schools.”

Zelich noted that Charleroi’s safety committee is fine-tuning its metal detector policy before the plan is presented to the school board. He added that the district is welcoming input from students.

“Students also have a say in what makes them feel safe,” said Zelich. “They want to know what the metal detector equipment will look like and what to expect when they are screened. Right now, we are planning on starting metal detector screening in the fall, but some students have suggested doing a trial run this spring.”

Zelich said that three metal detectors will be set up in Charleroi’s middle and high schools while the other detector will be installed at the Charleroi Elementary Center. Last year, Charleroi installed new security doors and tinted windows at each of its school buildings.
