CHARLEROI – Eight Belle Vernon Area High School students are facing citations on accusations they were under the influence of alcohol Friday at a cancer charity walk.

The students are being cited for underage drinking at a Relay for Life event at the Charleroi Area School District campus in Fallowfield Township, borough police Chief Eric Porter said.

“Belle Vernon has a zero tolerance policy, as do all schools,” Porter said Tuesday.

He said a Charleroi police school resource officer was approached Friday by a Belle Vernon administrator who suspected some students were under the influence of alcohol.

A group of students were then given Breathalyzer tests, police said.

Porter said he understood that the students who were cited will be disciplined by the school district in Belle Vernon.
