Washington & Jefferson College has named two new vice presidents, tapping Jeffrey A. Frick to be its vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, and Jim Irwin to be vice president for business and finance.

Currently serving at St. Norbert College in Wisconsin as dean of the college and academic vice president, Frick brings more than two decades of experience to his new role at W&J. According to John C. Knapp, W&J’s president, “He is a person of integrity who is well-respected by his colleagues.”

While at St. Norbert College, Frick increased the diversity of the faculty with hires for both new and existing programs. He also implemented or improved a number of internal procedures, including reforming the tenure and promotion process, leading the implementation of a new core curriculum, and launching a graduate program in business and a new undergraduate major in integrated studies.

Frick also worked with the president of St. Norbert and a donor to expand funding for faculty development initiatives and improve faculty salaries. He also collaborated with the vice president for business and finance in overseeing more than $50 million in capital improvements.

Prior to his appointment at St. Norbert College, Frick served at Illinois Wesleyan University as a professor of chemistry and chair of the chemistry department, acting registrar, and assistant provost and registrar.

He holds degrees from Loyola University in Chicago and Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.

Irwin brings more than 25 years of experience to his role, having served in both corporate and higher education settings. Most recently he was the associate vice president for finance and administration at Claremont Graduate University in California, where he oversaw general accounting, budget, housing and dining services and other areas.

“Jim comes to this important leadership position with a reputation for ensuring that students and employees are exceptionally well served,” Knapp said.

At Claremont Graduate University, Irwin developed a multi-year forecasting model that allows for various outcomes based on such factors as enrollment trends, fundraising efforts, grant production and other variables.

Earlier in his career, Irwin held positions in the administrative business office at the University of LaVerne in California, first as financial operations manager and later as assistant vice president for treasury and budget. He also served as an adjunct professor for the university’s business and public management departments.

Irwin holds degrees from LaVerne, the University of California-Riverside and is a licensed certified public accountant.

Both Frick and Irwin will join W&J this summer at dates to be determined.
