The Greene County Chamber of Commerce will host its 32nd annual Membership Banquet and awards ceremony Oct. 19 in Benedum Dining Hall on the Waynesburg University campus.

John “Buzz” Walters is receiving this year’s Distinguished Service Award. Walters is a graduate of Mapletown High School and a veteran of the U.S. Marines. He began a teaching career in 1960 at West Greene High School where his love of sports also turned into coaching. He coached football for eight years and wrestling for 32. He also coached at two other high schools in the area.

The 2019 Posthumous Distinguished Service Award will be presented in memory of former Greene County Sheriff Brian Tennant to his family. Tennant was a lifelong resident of Greene County and a 2001 graduate of Waynesburg Central High School. After graduation, he entered public service by joining the Waynesburg/Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company.

Receiving the McCracken Legacy Award is Fox Ford, which opened July 18, 1921, when L.L. Long founded the Mt. Morris Motor Co. in Mt. Morris. Company president Robert W. Fox died in 2012, leaving his three sons to continue the business. Mark E. Fox became president of Fox Ford Inc. in 2013. Mark, Ron and David continue to serve the community as volunteer firefighters and community leaders.

The Distinguished Service Awards are bestowed based on lasting contributions to community welfare, participation in civic organizations, evidence of leadership ability, success in vocation, personal and/or business progress, and cooperation with other individuals and organizations. The award has no relation to work performed for the chamber.

The chamber of commerce works with the business community to bring services and information to its members through meetings, newsletters, training seminars and networking gatherings. It also provides ribbon-cuttings as part of grand opening celebrations for new member businesses in the county.

The public is welcome to attend the banquet and may purchase tickets at the chamber office prior to Oct. 11.
