In the spirit of Thanksgiving and the holiday season, Peters Township resident Matthew Kulikowski came up with a social media memento for the generosity displayed by his community:

“PT Giving Back.”

Fellow township resident Becki Miller saw it and liked the message it conveys.

“I made a comment saying, ‘Oh, I can give a turkey.’ And it kind of escalated from there,” she said.

What escalated is a fundraising effort on behalf of the Finleyville Food Pantry in conjunction with Facebook’s annual #GivingTuesday, in which the company matches up to $7 million in donations pledged Dec. 1 for qualifying nonprofit organizations.

Donors immediately responded to the “PT Giving Back” effort, with nearly $5,000 raised as of Tuesday afternoon.

Also in support of the cause, Kulikowski and Miller arranged to have a drop box for nonperishable food to be placed at Peters Township Middle School. It will remain there until Dec. 14, when Miller will gather the items to take to the food pantry, which is based at First Presbyterian Church of Finleyville.

The pantry serves surrounding communities, including Peters, and because of circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the food needs of families and individuals in the area has increased substantially.

“We thought that would be great for this venture,” Miller said. “It feels good to be part of something positive for something so needed, especially this year.
